Tax on Betting Winnings in Ghana: Repealed in April 2025
There is no withholding tax on betting winnings in Ghana. The 10% withholding tax that applied from August 2023 was removed by the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which the President assented to on 2 April 2025. Nothing should be deducted from your winnings for tax when you cash out.
Correction. Until this update, these pages described the 10% withholding tax as still in force in 2026, and worked examples on this site reduced a GH₵ 100 payout to GH₵ 90. That was wrong: the tax had already been repealed. Every tax table, worked example and calculator on this site has been rebuilt from the repeal, and the affected figures are listed in our change log.
What was repealed, and when
The Income Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025 amended the Income Tax Act, 2015 (Act 896) to remove the withholding tax on winnings from lottery, betting and games of chance. Presidential assent was given on 2 April 2025, in the same set of bills that repealed the electronic transfer levy. From that point a Ghanaian sportsbook has had no basis for deducting a winnings tax at cash-out, and the Ghana Revenue Authority has nothing to collect from a casual punter on a winning bet.
What you should see at cash-out
A GH₵ 100 stake at 2.00 that wins returns GH₵ 200, and GH₵ 200 is what should reach your mobile-money wallet. If an operator still shows a tax line on your withdrawal, that is worth querying: ask the operator to identify the deduction in writing, and raise it with the Gaming Commission of Ghana if the answer does not name a current law. Mobile-money transfer fees charged by your network are a separate matter and are not tax.

The Gaming Commission of Ghana (GCG) is the licensing authority under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Every legal Ghanaian sportsbook holds a current GCG sports-betting licence and posts the certificate number in its site footer. What the GCG licence guarantees
KYC is mandatory: you'll provide Ghana Card (or Voter ID + passport-style photo) before the first withdrawal, regardless of bet size. Several competitors hold the same two categories on the same register, including Betwinner, SportyBet, Betway and 1xBet, and 22Bet holds a sports betting licence.
