Checking a code before you rely on it

Tanzania Betting Tax — the Gaming Act Rate on Winnings
Section 34(1) of the Gaming Act, Cap. 41 imposes gaming tax of 15% on winnings, and until 2026 subsection (2) cut that to ten percent for sports betting. Section 16(1)(b) of the Finance Act, 2026 deleted subsection (2); the Act commenced on 1 July 2026, so sports betting now sits on the 15% line with everything else. Your operator is the withholding agent: it deducts before paying you and remits to TRA by the seventh day of the following month.
Correction, 1 October 2026. An earlier version of this page described the rate as
a cut from 18% to 15% made by the Finance Act, 2022, and flagged the figure as unconfirmed. The
history was wrong. The Finance Act, 2022 set sports betting at ten percent and land-based casino at
twelve, and the Gaming Act, Cap. 41 (Revised Edition 2023) still carries those figures in section
34(2). The fifteen percent now shown comes from section 34(1) and reaches sports betting only
because section 16(1)(b) of the
Finance Act, 2026
deleted subsection (2), with effect from 1 July 2026. One detail is still open: the Act defines a
“winning” as the receipt of a payment, while the Tanzania Revenue Authority’s own
gaming-tax table
describes the base for the winnings tax as net winnings. The calculator below uses the net-winnings
base, which is the one operators apply. That TRA table also still prints the pre-July rates.
What the gaming tax on winnings applies to
Operators apply it to the net winnings portion of a cash-out — gross payout minus your effective stake — which is the base the Tanzania Revenue Authority uses in its own gaming-tax table.
